How to protect your energy from the networking naysayer
Category: Networking

Have you ever found yourself trapped in conversation with someone who only sees storm clouds – never silver linings? Lately at networking events I’ve met a few Negative Nancys (and Nigels) whose gloomy commentary on everything … the venue, the economy, even the coffee … threatens to sap the energy from the room.
Staying upbeat isn’t just about personal comfort; it’s a smart business decision. Our mindset shapes the stories we tell ourselves and, ultimately, how confidently we show up. Here’s how I keep my spirits (and conversations) positive without getting drawn into a doom‑and‑gloom spiral.
Acknowledge, then redirect
A simple nod to their feelings shows respect, without signing up for the complaint fest.
- “That sounds tough, I can see why you feel that way. Have you come across any good solutions?”
- “That’s an interesting perspective. On a brighter note, have you spotted any exciting trends lately?”
Set a time‑out
If they refuse to switch gears, exit gracefully:
- “It’s been great hearing your thoughts … I need to say hello to a few others before the event wraps up.”
No drama, no debate, just a clear boundary.
Seek out the pragmatists
Find a Pragmatic Penny (or Peter). They recognise challenges but focus on what they can control … exactly the kind of balanced optimism that keeps conversations productive.
Negativity is contagious. Spend too long in the doom loop and your own narrative can slip into worst‑case scenarios, making it tough to stay confident and proactive. Guard your energy so you can show up as your best, most resourceful self.
